Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh, commonly known as Lalan Singh, the Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairy, is set to inaugurate the 21st Livestock Census, a major endeavor aimed at gathering complete data on India's livestock sector. The inaugural event is set for October 25, 2024, at the Hotel Leela Ambience Convention in Shahdara, New Delhi.

Regarding The 21st Livestock Census

Historical Background

  • The Livestock Census has been held every five years since 1919, and this will be the 21st iteration. It is an important exercise in supporting policy decisions and program implementations in animal husbandry.

Duration

  • The Census will be held between October 2024 and February 2025.

Collaborating agencies

  • Undertaken with the assistance of the State and Union Territory Animal Husbandry and Dairy Departments.

Census Process and Technology

  • Approximately one lakh veterinarians and para-veterinarians will conduct door-to-door enumeration in India's countryside and urban wards.

  • Data will be captured and transmitted digitally using mobile devices, resulting in increased efficiency and accuracy in processing.

Data Scope

Species Covered

  • Data will be gathered on 15 livestock species, including cattle, buffalo, mithun, yak, sheep, goat, pig, camel, horse, pony, mule, donkey, dog, rabbit, and elephant.

Poultry species

  • There will also be counts of fowl, duck, turkey, geese, quail, Gini fowl, ostrich, and emu.

Breed Data

  • The census will document 219 indigenous breeds from 16 species recognized by the ICAR-National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR).

Unique Features Of This Census

  • For the first time, pastoralists' livestock holdings will be independently documented.

  • The gender of the individual principally involved in livestock rearing will be gathered, providing a social component to the data.

Significance

  • The Census will provide basic data for program design and implementation in the animal husbandry and dairy industries.

  • The Census' insights about livestock numbers, distribution, and breed diversity will help shape policies and allocate resources for long-term sector growth.
