The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the development of a new missile testing range in Nagayalanka, Andhra Pradesh. This effort intends to improve India's defense capabilities, particularly for testing tactical missile weapons. The new facility will concentrate on surface-to-air missiles, anti-tank missiles, and other sophisticated projects under the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO).
Key Details Of Approval
The CCS meeting also approved numerous critical proposals, including the purchase of 31 Predator drones from the United States and the construction of two nuclear submarines through Project ATV. Plans to build military roadways and enhance space-based capabilities were also approved. The DRDO is developing a variety of weapon systems, including Very Short Range Air Defence Systems and quick reaction surface-to-air missile systems.
Importance Of The New Facility
This missile testing range will serve as a vital hub for the DRDO's tactical missile projects, considerably improving India's defense infrastructure. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed delight in the state's involvement in national security, adding that the region will help to progress technology and create jobs in the defense sector. The complex will have advanced launch control centers and monitoring stations, and it is planned to be completed within three years of the site being allocated to DRDO.
Historical Context
The Integrated Test Range (ITR) is part of a larger project that has seen major investments in missile testing capabilities in India. The Machilipatnam Test Range Project, which has been in the works since 2012, is a significant step toward creating a comprehensive testing facility capable of supporting both short- and long-range missile operations. The groundbreaking ceremony for the range occurred in 2019, and with this latest sanction, India's defense sector is prepared for future improvements.
