Description

A new study published in Geophysical Research Letters reveals that diamond dust could be a useful SRM material. The study tested seven substances and discovered diamonds to be the most effective at reflecting solar light. Researchers propose blasting five million tons of diamond dust into the upper atmosphere each year to reduce temperatures by 1.6 degrees Celsius.

About Geoengineering

Geoengineering refers to large-scale activities to modify the Earth's climate system. It tries to counteract the impacts of global warming. There are two basic strategies: solar radiation management (SRM) and carbon dioxide removal (CDR). SRM aims to reflect solar radiation away from Earth, whereas CDR aims to remove CO2 from the atmosphere.

Solar Radiation Management Explained

SRM is a major topic of attention. It entails placing items in the sky or space to reflect sunlight. This could potentially lower global temperatures. The theme is inspired by volcanic explosions. When volcanoes erupt, they emit sulfur dioxide, which produces particles that reflect sunlight. For example, the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption reduced global temperatures by 0.5 degrees Celsius.

Other SRM Materials

Previous investigations looked explored a variety of materials for SRM, including sulfur, calcium, and sodium chloride. Each has its benefits and cons. Diamonds, on the other hand, have emerged as an appealing option due to their distinct qualities.

Carbon Dioxide Removal Technologies

DR technologies aim to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) is one such approach. It absorbs and stores CO2 emissions from industrial sources underground. Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) makes use of captured CO2 for industrial activities. Direct Air Capture (DAC) captures CO2 directly from the atmosphere. While these technologies can assist reduce atmospheric CO2, they have limitations and scalability difficulties.

Concerns About Carbon Capture Technologies

CCS technology is not without problems. According to studies, relying extensively on CCS to accomplish climate objectives could be unrealistic and costly. The anticipated cost of meeting climate targets largely through CCS could reach $30 trillion when compared to an emphasis on renewable energy. Furthermore, obtaining secure storage sites for captured CO2 is getting more challenging.

The Future Of Geoengineering

Despite the challenges, geoengineering remains a key area of research. With the evident effects of climate change, methods such as SRM and CDR are gaining traction. There are no scenarios for attaining climate targets that do not include some of these technologies. Continued exploration and careful analysis of the ramifications are required for any subsequent implementation.
