Description

Vikram Dev Dutt, a 1993-batch IAS officer from the AGMUT cadre, has been officially appointed Coal Secretary. Dutt, who previously served as Director General of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), succeeds VL Kantha Rao, who took on the additional role after Amrit Lal Meena was appointed Bihar's Chief Secretary. With India's power consumption expected to rise by 6-7% each year, Dutt confronts a tremendous challenge in increasing coal production to fulfill the growing needs of the power and industrial sectors.

Background To Recent Changes

Amrit Lal Meena, the former Coal Secretary, was deported to his home cadre in Bihar at the request of the Bihar government. His resignation reflects the ongoing changes in the administrative system as the administration seeks to manage resources in response to regional demands.

Future Challenges

Dutt's new position comes at a crucial time, as the Indian government wants to boost coal production to more than 1 billion tons and add 80 gigawatts of coal-fired capacity by 2032. This is critical for balancing the system despite the increasing use of renewable energy sources while assuring reliable power generation.
