Researchers from the University of Birmingham and Hainan University reported their findings in the journal ACS ES&T Water.

About PFASs

PFAS are manmade compounds that do not degrade quickly in the environment. They are utilized in a variety of items, including nonstick cookware, water-repellent apparel, and stain-resistant fabrics. Some PFAS have been prohibited, but many remain in use. These substances can enter the body via inhalation, ingestion, or skin absorption. Study Results

The team gathered 153 water samples. They evaluated 112 bottled water samples from UK and Chinese stores, including both still and effervescent varieties. In addition, they collected 41 tap water samples from Birmingham, Worcester, Coventry, and Derby, as well as 14 from Shenzhen, China. The findings revealed that more than 99% of bottled water contains perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS).

Concentration Levels

The concentrations of PFAS in bottled water varied. Purified water contained lower amounts than natural mineral water. The majority of bottled water tests fell below the regulatory authorities' health recommendation thresholds. However, tap water in China contained greater levels of PFAS, with Shenzhen samples exceeding the US EPA's limit contamination level of 4 ng/L.

Regulatory bodies set health advisory standards for PFAS. These levels are intended to protect public health. The study discovered that, while bottled water generally matched these standards, tap water in some locations, particularly in China, posed a higher risk.

There are efficient strategies for reducing PFAS in drinking water. Boiling water with carbon filters can remove up to 90% of these pollutants. Professor Stuart Harrad demonstrated that modest therapies can lessen PFAS levels.
