Description
The "Mera Hou Chongba" celebration was held in Manipur, despite persistent ethnic hostilities between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups. The festival was held on the 15th lunar day of Mera Month, at Sana Konung and Kangla Uttra in Imphal, the state capital.
Objective
The primary goal of "Mera Hou Chongba" is to foster unity and solidarity among Manipur's diverse ethnic groups, particularly among those living in the hills and valleys.
Participants
Village chiefs, cultural troupes, and invited guests from numerous villages attended the event, which showcased a wide representation of the state's indigenous cultures.
Key Addresses
Awangbou Newmai- The Chief Guest, a Naga Minister, underlined the importance of cultural linkages across ethnic groups and urged young people to preserve their cultural legacy in the face of modernization.
Leishemba Sanajaoba- The titular king and Rajya Sabha MP hailed this year's celebration as one of the best in history, urging indigenous tribes to promote unity and peace.
Cultural Significance
The festival celebrated the region's rich legacy through traditional rites, cultural exchanges, and performances such as Men Tongba, Yenkhong Tamba, and Thang Ta Salutation.
A souvenir was released in conjunction with the festival, acting as a memory of the festivities and cultural exchanges that occurred.
In his statement, Chief Minister N Biren Singh reaffirmed his desire for peace and solidarity, emphasizing the festival's importance in creating togetherness among many tribes.
