On October 6, 2024, Professor Shubha Tole was voted president-elect of the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO), a global organization that represents neuroscience societies. The election was held during IBRO's annual meeting in Chicago. This is a historic moment since Tole will become the first president-elect from a poor country.
About IBRO
The International Brain Research Organisation (IBRO), founded in 1961, seeks to advance neuroscience via education, training, research, and public outreach. It represents 69 neuroscience societies from 57 nations. IBRO produces two prominent scientific publications, Neuroscience and IBRO Neuroscience Reports, which present significant findings from around the world.
New Leadership Structure
The newly elected leaders, including Professor Tole, will assume their positions on January 1, 2026. Initially, they will serve a one-year advisory period beginning in 2025. Their leadership periods will run until the end of 2028. Other positions elected include Professor João Relvas as Secretary General Elect and Professor David Belin as Treasurer-Elect.

Professor Tole is a well-known neuroscientist who holds a PhD from Caltech. Since 1999, she has overseen significant neuroscience studies in India. She has also worked with a number of neuroscience organizations and is well-known for supporting diversity and encouraging more women to pursue careers in science.
