According to the recently released 'EnviStats India-2024' report, the Nagarjuna Sagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve (NSTR) ranks first among India's 55 tiger reserves in terms of leopard population, with an estimated 360 leopards.

About The Nagarjunsagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve (NSTR)

  • It is located in Andhra Pradesh's Nallamala hill ranges (an extension of the Eastern Ghats).

  • This is the largest tiger reserve in the country, covering an area of 5937 square kilometers.

  • It has the greatest tiger population in the Eastern Ghats.

  • It's called after two important dams in the area: Nagarjuna Sagar Dam and Srisailam Dam.

  • The NSTR consists of two wildlife sanctuaries: the Rajiv Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary and the Gundla Brahmeswaram Wildlife Sanctuary (GBM).

  • The river Krishna flows through this reserve for around 270 kilometers.  

  • The topography comprises of plateaus, mountains, gorges, and deep valleys.

Vegetation

  • Tropical dry deciduous forests have an undergrowth of bamboo and grasses.

Flora

  • The area supports numerous endemic species, including Andrographis nallamalayana, Eriolaena lushingtonii, Crotalaria madurensis Var, Dicliptera beddomei, and Premna hamiltonii.

Fauna

  • Tiger, leopard, wolf, wild dog, and jackal are among the most prominent faunal species.

  • The prey species include Sambar, Chital, Chowsingha, Chinkara, Mouse Deer, Wild Boar, and Porcupine.

  • The river Krishna is home to muggers, otters, and turtles.
