About The UN Interim Force In Lebanon (UNIFIL)

  • UNIFIL is a peacekeeping force in Lebanon that was established by the UN Security Council in March 1978, following Israel's initial invasion in what became known as the South Lebanon Conflict.

  • UNIFIL was established to oversee Israel's departure from Lebanon and to restore peace and security in the region.

  • Following a 34-day battle in Lebanon between Hezbollah and Israel in 2006, in which 1,100 Lebanese were murdered, UNIFIL's mandate was expanded to include monitoring the cessation of hostilities and assisting Lebanese armed forces deployed throughout Southern Lebanon.

  • It has approximately 10,500 peacekeepers from 48 troop-contributing countries.

  • Indonesia has the biggest number of UNIFIL personnel. Italy, India, Nepal, and China also provide significant numbers of soldiers to the peacekeeping mission.

  • UNIFIL is supported by a separate account approved annually by the General Assembly.

  • It is part of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force.

  • UNIFIL's rules of engagement permit the use of force only when necessary for self-defense or to carry out its functions.
