Description

India's Prime Minister attended the 19th East Asia Summit (EAS) on October 11, 2024, which was held in Vientiane, Lao PDR. His attendance underscored India's commitment to collaborating with other countries in the Indo-Pacific region, which encompasses the Indian and Pacific Oceans.

India's Role In The Indo-Pacific

The Prime Minister emphasized ASEAN's (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) role in molding the Indo-Pacific's future. He noted India's goal for the region, known as the Pacific goal, which emphasizes collaboration with countries such as the Quad nations (India, Australia, Japan, and the United States) to foster regional peace and cooperation.

Act East Policy

The Prime Minister's attendance in the meeting underscores India's Act East Policy, which seeks to improve relations with Southeast Asian countries. He emphasized that a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific—in which everyone has the opportunity to flourish and prosper is critical to ensuring peace and prosperity for all.

The Prime Minister discussed the similarities between India's Indo-Pacific Ocean Initiative and ASEAN's Indo-Pacific Outlook. Both programs prioritize progress and cooperation over expansionism or dominance. This demonstrates a common way to resolving regional challenges through collaboration.

Support For The East Asia Summit

The Prime Minister also reaffirmed India's commitment to the East Asia Summit (EAS) framework. He noted that other member countries support Nalanda University, an old center of learning that India is resurrecting. The PM also issued an invitation to the next Heads of Higher Education Conclave, which will strengthen educational cooperation.

Promoting Dialogue And Diplomacy

The Prime Minister highlighted that settling global problems, particularly those impacting the Global South (developing countries), required discussion and humanitarian solutions rather than armed power. He emphasized the necessity of finding peaceful solutions to issues and providing help to people harmed by conflict.

The Prime Minister emphasized the major risks the globe faces today, including as terrorism and cybersecurity issues. He urged governments to work together to address these issues, maintaining global peace and security via collaborative efforts.

Expressions Of Gratitude

The Prime Minister congratulated the Prime Minister of Laos for hosting the meeting and expressed support for Malaysia, which will become the new ASEAN Chair. He emphasized India's commitment to working closely with ASEAN and other regional partners to promote mutual growth and partnership.
