Description

The Major Atmospheric Cherenkov Experiment (MACE), Asia's biggest imaging Cherenkov telescope, was inaugurated at roughly 4,300 meters altitude in Hanle, Ladakh. Developed by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in partnership with numerous Indian enterprises, this is a significant step forward in India's ability to investigate cosmic rays, which are high-energy particles from outer space.

Function Of  MACE

Although gamma rays, a kind of high-energy radiation from space, cannot penetrate the Earth's atmosphere, they do produce particles that emit flashes of light known as Cherenkov radiation when they contact with the atmosphere. This radiation is akin to an aircraft's sonic boom, except it happens through light. MACE records these light bursts with its mirrors and cameras, allowing scientists to trace them back to their cosmic origins, such as supernovae or black holes.

Reason To Chose Hanle For The MACE

Hanle has perfect circumstances for a telescope such as MACE due to its clean sky and low light pollution, which are crucial for detecting tiny gamma ray signals. The region's great altitude also lowers interference from the Earth's atmosphere, making it simpler to see cosmic rays.

Hanle is predicted to become a key centre for gamma ray research due to its ideal settings. The site's success with MACE may lead to the installation of more telescopes and more international cooperation, bringing astronomers from all around the world to investigate the secrets of the the universe.

About MACE Observatory

MACE is the world's tallest atmospheric Cherenkov telescope, with a diameter of 21 meters and a weight of 175 tonnes. Its massive reflector spans 356 square meters and is made up of 1,424 diamond-turned metallic mirrors. The telescope has 712 actuators that assist adjust its mirrors, 1,088 photomultiplier tubes (which detect dim light), and 68 camera modules. Despite its huge size, the design keeps the structure lightweight and strong enough to survive extreme temperatures and harsh weather conditions. Advanced electronics assist MACE in effectively gathering and processing light signals from space.
