Description

Three scientists have received the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their groundbreaking research on proteins. Demis Hassabis and John M Jumper from Google DeepMind are credited for utilising artificial intelligence (AI) to predict the 3D structures of virtually all known proteins. David Baker of the University of Washington is honoured for creating entirely novel proteins that do not exist naturally.

The Function Of Artificial Intelligence

For many years, predicting how a protein folds based on its amino acid sequence was a challenging task in biochemistry. Traditionally, scientists utilised technologies such as X-ray crystallography, which took a significant amount of time and effort. Hassabis and Jumper changed this by creating an artificial intelligence model that could predict protein 3D structures. This AI model was trained on known sequences and structures, learning to recognise patterns that enabled it to predict the structure of previously unknown proteins.

Effect Of Alphafold2

In 2020, Hassabis and Jumper's AI model, AlphaFold2, attained accuracy comparable to X-ray crystallography, representing a milestone in protein research. By October 2024, over two million scientists worldwide had adopted this instrument, allowing them to better comprehend proteins and use their knowledge in disciplines such as health, agriculture, and environmental research.

David Baker's Achievements

While Hassabis and Jumper concentrated on predicting known protein structures, David Baker made significant progress in building new proteins from scratch. His computational techniques enabled scientists to develop proteins with unique activities that do not exist in nature. One well-known example is Top7, a protein discovered by Baker and his team in 2003. These newly created proteins have several potential applications, including nanotechnology, drug development, and making industrial processes more sustainable.

Advances in understanding and engineering proteins offer immense promise. They might lead to novel illness therapies, environmental protection, and the development of new industrial materials. Because proteins are so necessary in all living things, these discoveries are expected to spark numerous new developments in the coming years.
