The national government has granted interim authority to establish Bihar's second tiger reserve in Kaimur district. This decision follows a recommendation by the Bihar state government and is intended to improve wildlife conservation in the area.
The Proposal And Approval Process
Prem Kumar, Bihar's Forest, Environment, and Climate Change Minister, stated on October 8, 2024, that the Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary (KWLS) will be converted into a tiger reserve. The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) and a technical committee authorised it at their 12th meeting.
Need For Second Reserve
Bihar already has one tiger reserve, the Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR), which now houses 54 tigers, above its optimal maximum of 45. Because VTR has reached its maximum capacity, Another tiger reserve is needed to effectively control the rising tiger population and keep the ecology balanced.
Plans For Relocating Tigers
To ensure a healthy tiger population, some VTR tigers will be transported to the new Kaimur Tiger Reserve. This move will guarantee that the tigers have adequate room and resources, resulting in a more sustainable and environmentally friendly habitat.
Important Developments And Adjustments
For many years, the forest department has worked to turn KWLS into a tiger reserve. Initially, they planned for the reserve to encompass 900 square kilometres, but due to NTCA concerns, the size was cut to 450 square kilometres of ideal tiger habitat.
Starting Of Tiger Reserve
The Kaimur District Forest Officer discovered tiger tracks and prey remnants in 2018, which prompted efforts to establish the Kaimur Tiger Reserve. The region was then assessed by specialists, who determined that it was suited for tigers.
Ecological Significance
Kaimur's woods are the largest in Bihar, comprising 1,134 square kilometres and boasting the state's greatest green cover (34%). It is linked to wildlife corridors in neighbouring states, making it a significant location for biodiversity and natural This decision is a crucial step towards safeguarding tigers and maintaining Bihar's unique biodiversity.
