Description
Following the successful launch of Chandrayaan-3 in August 2023, India's National Space Commission has authorised the Lunar Polar Exploration Mission (Lupex). This project, a collaboration between India's ISRO and Japan's JAXA, will focus on researching the Moon's resources, particularly water near the lunar south pole.
Objectives Of Lupex Mission
The Lupex mission's primary purpose is to investigate water and other valuable resources on the Moon. Scientists want to know how much water is present, where it is, and if it is only on the surface or beneath the Moon's soil, known as regolith.
Mission Duration
Lupex is meant to last up to 100 days on the Moon's surface. This is a longer duration than previous lunar missions, allowing the expedition to collect more data. It will investigate locations that are continuously dark and never receive sunshine, utilising unique drilling equipment and on-site studies.
Collaboration Of India And Japan
In this endeavour, India and Japan will share responsibility. JAXA (Japan) will build the rover and rocket, while ISRO (India) will construct the lander that will transport the rover to the Moon's surface. The Lupex rover will weigh around 350 kg, far more than the Pragyan rover from Chandrayaan-3, which weighed only 26 kg.
Mission Mean In The Future
Lupex's data will assist plan future Moon missions, including ones that may return lunar samples to Earth. It is also part of India's overall ambition to send astronauts to the Moon by 2040. Lupex will also boost international cooperation in space exploration, particularly between India and Japan.
