The Delhi Zoo's membership with the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) was recently terminated due to concerns over the care of its lone African elephant, Shankar.
About The World Association Of Zoos And Aquariums
It serves as the umbrella organisation for the World Zoo and Aquarium Community.
It is the only association representing zoos and aquariums on a global scale, having been founded in 1935.
WAZA's aim is to guide, promote, and assist zoos, aquariums, and other like-minded organisations throughout the world in animal care and welfare, education about the environment, and worldwide conservation.
Its members include renowned zoos and aquariums, regional and national Associations of Zoos and Aquariums, and certain associate organisations from across the world, such as zoo veterinarians or zoo educators.
WAZA Conducts The Following Activities
Promoting collaboration between zoological parks and aquariums for the protection, management, and reproduction of captive animals.
Encourages the highest levels of animal welfare and husbandry.
Promoting and facilitating collaboration among national and regional groups and their members.
Assist in representing zoological parks and aquariums in other international organisations or gatherings.
Advancing wildlife conservation, environmental research, and environmental education.
WAZA has forged alliances with prominent worldwide conservation NGOs.
They are devoted to addressing global concerns such as illicit wildlife trading, coral reef restoration, marine trash, sustainable palm oil, and climate change.
