Description

The State of Global Water Resource Report 2023 states that 2023 was the driest year for global rivers in over three decades.

The State Of Global Water Resources Report

  • The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) has been publishing an annual report since 2021.

  • It provides a complete and consistent assessment of the world's water resources.

  • It is based on feedback from dozens of national meteorological and hydrological services, as well as other organisations and experts.

Underline From The 2023 Report

  • The year 2023 was the driest year for world rivers in 33 years.

  • The previous five years have seen widespread below-normal river flows, with reservoir inflows following a similar trend.

  • It also states that 2023 was the second consecutive year in which all parts of the world with glaciers recorded ice loss, and that "glaciers suffered the largest mass loss ever registered in 50 years."

  • More than 600 gigatons (Gt) of water were lost in all glaciated locations throughout the planet.

  • According to the research, 6 billion people already lack access to water for at least one month of the year, with this figure likely to rise to more than 5 billion by 2050.

  • The world is far from meeting Sustainable Development Goal 6 for water and sanitation.
