The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is creating a new set of standards known as the National Agriculture Code. This is comparable to current national rules for buildings and electrical systems, but is tailored particularly to agriculture. The National Advisory Committee will focus on-
Agriculture Processes- This comprises selecting the appropriate crops, preparing the soil, planting, watering, and harvesting.
Post-Harvest Operations- After crops are harvested, the NAC will give rules for initial processing, storing products, and ensuring that everything can be tracked back to its source.
Input Management- This refers to the guidelines for utilising chemical fertilisers, pesticides, and promoting organic farming.
New agricultural Methods- The NAC will also include new agricultural technology such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and sustainable farming practices.
Objectives Of NAC
The NAC has several major goals-
Create a national framework to govern different farming systems in India.
Create a culture of quality in Indian agriculture that policymakers and regulators can emulate.
Serve as a guide for farmers to assist them make better judgements about their agricultural operations.
Encourage the use new agricultural practices, such as smart farming and sustainability projects.
Duration Of NAC
The BIS is draughting the NAC, with the objective of finishing it by October 2025. Once completed, farmers will be educated to comprehend and apply the new requirements in their daily job.
About Standardised Agriculture Demonstration Farms
To assist test and promote the NAC, the BIS is also establishing Standardised Agriculture Demonstration Farms (SADFs). These farms will be built with the assistance of major agricultural institutes and used as experimental grounds.
