Vera Voronova of Kazakhstan and Ysabel Agustina Calderon Carlos of Peru have been awarded the MIDORI Prize for Biodiversity 2024 in recognition of their outstanding achievements to biodiversity conservation and sustainability. Voronova, executive director of Kazakhstan's Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity, has led initiatives to restore ecosystems and safeguard endangered species in Central Asia, which help rural populations. Calderon Carlos, the founder of Sumak Kawsay in Peru, has been acknowledged for her efforts to avoid pollinator decline, particularly through her "Bee Honey Route," which combines honey production, community development, and ecological restoration.
Contributions To Biodiversity
Voronova's work has been on incorporating rural communities in conservation activities that benefit both ecosystems and livelihoods. Meanwhile, Calderón Carlos has developed a novel way to strengthening local economies, particularly among Indigenous women and youth, by combining sustainable tourism and pollinator protection.
Award Ceremony And Significance
The AEON Environmental Foundation and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity award the prize every two years, which includes $100,000 in cash and a commemorative plaque. This year's winners will be recognized on October 29, 2024, during the COP 16 in Cali, Colombia. Since its creation, the prize has recognized 19 individuals from 17 nations for their contributions to biodiversity.
