A honey badger was recently photographed for the first time in Uttarakhand's Terai East Forest Division.

Information About The Honey Badger

  • It is also known as the Ratel and is closely related to skunks, otters, ferrets, and other badgers.

  • Honey badgers are omnivorous, nocturnal creatures from the weasel family.

  • These creatures are distinguished by their strong, curved claws, which they use to dig holes for refuge. Their food is diversified, including small animals, fruits, and honey.

  • They are known for their solitary behaviour and ability to twist and spin to avoid predators.

  • Distribution- They are distributed throughout Africa and Asia.

  • They have also been seen in a few other Indian sites, including Bannerghatta National Park in Karnataka, Chilika Lagoon in Odisha, and the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra.

Ecological Significance

  • They assist preserve ecological balance by feeding on smaller animals and pests, so controlling populations and protecting crops.

  • They contribute to nutrient cycle by enriching the soil with their food and faeces.

  • They are vital markers of ecosystem health, providing a diversified and vibrant habitat for other species.
