Description

A herpetofauna study was done in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR), specifically in the Masinagudi Division, from September 7th to 9th, 2024. This survey identified a wide range of species, including 33 reptiles and 36 amphibians. Four of these species could be altogether new to science.

Overview Of The Survey

The survey includes locations ranging in elevation from 300 to 2,000 meters above sea level, as well as various types of habitats. It was led by Deputy Director Arun Kumar P., with Field Director D. Venkatesh providing guidance. This was the first comprehensive study of herpetofauna in this area of the reserve, which made the findings all the more exciting.

Potential New Species

Four new species may have been discovered during the survey-

  • Two geckos, one from the Cnemaspis genus and one from the Hemidactylus genus.

  • A skink (a sort of lizard).

  • One frog from the Sphaerotheca species.

These species will require additional research to be officially confirmed as new, including taxonomy and molecular studies. This requires experts to examine the physical characteristics and genetic material of the obtained specimens.

Endangered Species

The survey also discovered other endangered species, including-

  • The Cave Dancing Frog (Micrixalus Spelunca).

  • Indraneil's nightfrog (Nyctibatrachus indraneili).

Other significant species, including the striped coral snake (Calliophis nigrescens), the king cobra (Ophiophagus hannah), and the Nilgiri burrowing snake (Plectrurus perrotetii), were also seen. These species are either endangered or unique to the region, therefore their existence is important for conservation.

Ecological Significance

The Masinagudi Division in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve is biologically significant because it contains a mix of forests and shrub jungles, providing an ideal habitat for a variety of species. The area's geography makes it a biodiversity hotspot, which means it is home to a diverse range of plants and animals. It also serves as an important source of water for both local wildlife and surrounding human groups.

More surveys are planned, particularly during the forthcoming monsoon season, to investigate locations that are difficult to reach and to focus on species that are active during dry times. These future studies are likely to unearth even more species, furthering our understanding of the region's wildlife.

Implications For Conservation

The survey results are important for conserving the animals in the area. With this new information, conservationists can create more effective plans to manage the reserve and safeguard these species. Including prior research, MTR presently has 55 identified reptile species and 39 amphibian species, with over 40% of them unique to the Western Ghats, a biodiversity hotspot. Furthermore, 16 species identified in the reserve are deemed threatened, emphasising the necessity for ongoing conservation efforts.
