Archaeologists have discovered the oldest known kohl stick, a sort of ancient eyeliner, at the Yesilova Hoyuk archaeological site in Turkey. This discovery demonstrates that people have used cosmetics for almost 8,000 years.

• The kohl stick is constructed of green serpentine stone with traces of black paint on the tip. It is around 8,200 years old and is the earliest evidence of individuals applying cosmetics. The chief archaeologist, Zafer Derin, revealed that kohl has been utilised in numerous societies throughout history.

• Kohl was widely used in Egypt, the Levant (east Mediterranean), and Anatolia (modern-day Turkey). It had both cosmetic and medicinal advantages. The discovery of this kohl stick demonstrates that even 8,200 years ago, ladies in the Aegean region of Ye?ilova cared about their looks.

• The kohl stick is approximately 10 cm long and 1 centimetre thick. It is finely formed, akin to a pen, demonstrating that humans back then possessed significant skills in crafting tools for exact application. 

• People most likely dipped the kohl stick in kohl powder before applying it to their eyes for cosmetics. The black substance on the stick's tip is thought to include manganese oxide, a popular element in traditional kohl.

• Kohl was not only used as a cosmetic, but also for eye care. According to ancient literature, it was thought to help treat eye ailments and shield the eyes from sunlight when applied in thick layers around the eyes. 

• Kohl was often created by grinding the mineral stibnite, which is found in hydrothermal deposits. The finely powdered powder was then put around the eyes to create the dark-lined effect.
