The 'Cruise Bharat Mission' is a new program stated by the Indian government to encourage cruise tourism in India. Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister, officially opened the cruise ship 'Empress' at Mumbai port. The mission is to capitalise on India's potential as a major cruise destination and expand the number of people who travel by cruise ship. The goal is to double cruise passenger volume by 2029.

Goals Of The Mission

The primary goal of the Cruise Bharat Mission is to establish India as a global hub for cruise tourism. The mission will focus on strengthening infrastructure such as cruise terminals, marketing India as a fantastic cruise destination, and gradually developing the complete cruise experience.

Three-Phase Strategy For Cruise Tourism

The Cruise Bharat Mission will be implemented in three phases-

  • Phase 1 (2024-2025) - The primary focus will be on conducting studies, developing master plans, and forming cooperation with neighbouring countries. It will also include upgrades to current cruise terminals and marinas.

  • Phase 2 (2025-2027) - During this phase, the government will begin building additional cruise terminals and expanding cruise destinations with great potential.

  • Phase 3 (2027-2029) - This phase will focus on integrating cruise routes across the Indian subcontinent while also developing cruise infrastructure and tourism destinations.

Key Performance Targets Outlined

The Cruise Bharat Mission has distinct purposes.

  • Sea Cruise Passengers- The mission's goal is to raise the number of sea cruise passengers from 0.5 million in the first phase to one million by the third phase.

  • River Cruise Passengers- The mission aims to raise river cruise passenger numbers from 0.5 million to 1.5 million.

Key Pillars Mission

The mission is structured around five major pillars to assure its success-

  • Sustainable Infrastructure & Capital- Developing world-class cruise terminals and marinas while prioritising environmental sustainability, such as lowering carbon emissions.

  • Technology and Operations- Making cruise operations more efficient by utilising sophisticated technology and digital processes such as e-clearance systems.

  • Cruise Promotion & Circuit Integration- Promoting India's cruises on a global scale and connecting numerous cruise circuits to provide tourists with a seamless experience.

Expected Mission Impact

The Cruise Bharat Mission is planned to generate 400,000 new employment and enhance the cruise experience for passengers. This will benefit local communities and economy, particularly in coastal locations. The mission is part of India's bigger aim to harness its Blue Economy, which focusses on the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, and to position India as a major participant in global maritime tourism.
