Recently, India's Prime Minister virtually unveiled three Param Rudra Super Computing Systems and a High Performance Computing (HPC) system for meteorological and climate science.
About The PARAM Rudra Supercomputer
It is intended to address challenging computational challenges across a variety of scientific and engineering fields.
The National Supercomputing Mission has constructed three indigenous Param Rudra supercomputers.
They have been deployed at three strategic locations: Delhi, Pune, and Kolkata.
In Pune, the Giant Metre Radio Telescope (GMRT) will use the supercomputer to study Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) and other celestial phenomena.
In Delhi, the Inter University Accelerator Centre (IUAC) will advance studies in material science and atomic physics.
In Kolkata, the S N Bose Centre will use supercomputing technology to advance studies in physics, cosmology, and earth sciences.
About High-Performance Computing (HPC) System
It is specifically designed for weather and climate studies.
This HPC system, based at two main sites, the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune and the National Center for Medium Range Weather Forecast (NCMRWF) in Noida, has tremendous computational capacity.
The new HPC systems are named 'Arka' and 'Arunika,' which symbolize their link to the Sun.
Important
These high-resolution models will considerably boost the accuracy and lead time of predictions linked to tropical cyclones, heavy precipitation, thunderstorms, hailstorms, heat waves, droughts, and other essential weather phenomena.
Key Facts About The National Supercomputing Mission
It was established in 2015 to offer the country with supercomputing infrastructure to satisfy the growing computational needs of universities, researchers, MSMEs, and startups.
It intends to establish a network of modern computing systems throughout India.
It is a joint effort between the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST).
It is run by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Pune and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru.
