India and the United Kingdom launched the Women in Space Leadership Programme (WiSLP) on September 25 with the goal of creating a gender-inclusive environment in space science.
The Department of Science and Technology (DST) initiative, in collaboration with the British Council as part of the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI), aims to help institutions strengthen gender-inclusive practices in space science by developing a strategic leadership framework.
"By building a robust leadership framework, we can empower women to contribute meaningfully to scientific research and innovation," said Dr Vandana Singh, Head of the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE)-KIRAN division at DST.
The programme would involve creating long-term mentorship networks and boosting scientific creativity by incorporating a female viewpoint into important fields like astrophysics and telecommunications.
The initiative will help 250 early career researchers (ECRs) become better prepared to take on leadership responsibilities while navigating gender biases and associated impediments.
The program will include channels for networking, awareness-raising, and peer-to-peer mentoring. Annapurni Subramaniam, Director of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), encouraged women to get involved early in the rising field of space research, which is extending into sectors like engineering and social sciences.
Michael Houlgate, Deputy Director of the British Council in India, underlined the necessity of collaboration in addressing global concerns and advocated for greater female representation in STEM professions.
Over the years, the UKIERI has enabled over 25,000 academic exchanges between 4,500 educational institutions, enhancing India-UK partnership in research and industry.
