Description

Australasian Narrow-nosed Spookfish is a new ghost shark species discovered by researchers in the Chatham Rise region near New Zealand.

About Ghost Sharks

  • Ghost sharks, also known as chimaeras and spookfish, are a type of cartilaginous fish that are closely related to sharks and rays.

  • They split genetically from their shark ancestors roughly 400 million years ago.

Features

  • They have long, tapered bodies and extremely huge heads.

  • The ghost shark's largest observed length is approximately 49 inches, although scientists estimate they can grow to be more than six feet in exceptional situations.

  • Their skin color varies from black to pale blue to brownish grey.

  • They have haunting black eyes and smooth, light brown skin that is free of scales.

  • Their eyes are backed by a reflecting tissue layer that causes them to shine in the dark, giving them an uncanny, even ghostlike look.

  • They inhabit at depths ranging from 200 to 2,600 meters and tend to stay close to the seafloor.

  • Their diet consists mostly of shellfish, mollusks, and worms found on or beneath the seafloor.

  • They are frequently described fish as the ocean's butterflies because of the way they glide through the water on their huge pectoral fins.

  • Ghost sharks are assumed to be solitary animals because they are usually seen alone.
