Description

Kerala has once again won first place in the State Food Safety Index (SFSI) 2024, marking the southern state's second consecutive year in the top spot. The paper was released during the first session of the FSSAI Global Food Regulators Summit 2024.

About The State Food Safety Index (SFSI)

  • The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) releases the Index annually.

  • It began in 2018-19 with the goal of bringing a competitive and constructive improvement to the country's food safety environment.

  • The index will help us provide our population with safe and nutritious meals.

The Parameters Of SFSI

  • This index is based on the State/UT's performance on five key metrics.

  • Data management for human resources and institutions, compliance, and food testing infrastructure and surveillance.

  • Training and Capacity Building

  • Consumer empowerment.

In the 2023 index, a new parameter named 'Improvement in SFSI Rank' was introduced.

General Information

  • The Index is a dynamic quantitative and qualitative benchmarking approach that offers an objective framework for assessing food safety across all states and union territories.

  • The States/UTs are grouped into three categories:

  • Types of states: large, small, and union territories (UTs).

Key Findings Of The Report

Top-Performing States-

  • Kerala

  • Tamil Nadu

  • Jammu Kashmir

  • Gujarat

  • Nagaland

Kerala's Advancement

  • FSSAI highlighted that Kerala met more than 100% of its inspection targets in FY24 and upgraded its food-testing infrastructure.

  • Organized particular campaigns to raise the number of license holders and registrations, among other accomplishments.

Union Health Minister's Remarks

  • The FSSAI is attempting to harmonize food safety regulations with worldwide benchmarks and to align pesticide Maximum Residue Limits with global Codex standards.

  • He emphasized the importance of a strict food-safety standard and a flexible regulatory framework to meet emerging food trends such as plant-based proteins, insect protein, and lab-grown meat.

FSSAI Has Launched A Platform For Food Safety

  • FSSAI created Food Import Rejection Alerts (FIRA), an online platform that alerts the public and relevant food safety agencies to food import rejections at Indian borders.

  • It also launched Food Import Clearance System 2.0 (FICS 2.0), an advanced version of Food Import Clearance System that provides a complete online solution with new features, automation, and integration with other relevant portals to speed up processing and transparency.

  • The FSSAI is an autonomous authority under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

About FSSAI

  • The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) was founded under the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006, a consolidated statute governing food safety and regulation in India.
