Description

The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the establishment of the first Bharatiya Anatriksh Station (BAS) by expanding the scope of the Gaganyaan initiative.

About The Programme

  • ISRO is developing Bharatiya Antariksh Station, India's own space station. ISRO plans to build the station in stages and hope to have it operational by 2035.

  •  The Indian space station is now in the 'conceptualisation phase', which involves studying and identifying the general architecture, number, and types of modules required for the station.

  • Cabinet approves the development of the first module of the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS-1) as well as missions to demonstrate and evaluate various technologies for building and running the BAS.

Extension Of Gaganyaan Programme

  • Revisions to the Gaganyaan Programme include the scope of development and precursor missions for BAS, as well as one more uncrewed mission and new hardware requirements for ongoing Gaganyaan Programme development.

  • The human spaceflight technology development and demonstration program consists of eight flights, which will be completed by December 2028 with the launch of the first BAS-1 unit.

About Gaganyaan

  • The Gaganyaan Programme, which was approved in December 2018, aims to conduct human spaceflight to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and build the groundwork for an Indian human space exploration program in the future.

  • The Gaganyaan Programme will be a national initiative led by ISRO in partnership with industry, academia, and other national agencies as stakeholders.

  • The programme will be implemented using ISRO's established project management methodology.

  • The goal is to develop and demonstrate crucial technologies for long-duration human spaceflight.

Accomplishment Of Goal

  • By 2026, ISRO will launch four missions as part of the ongoing Gaganyaan Programme.

  • Development of the first module of BAS

  • Four missions to demonstrate and validate various BAS technologies by December 2028.

  • This is in addition to the two uncrewed and one crewed missions that have previously been approved for the first human spaceflight under the Gaganyaan program.

Significance Of BAS

  • The country will acquire important technological capabilities for human spaceflight missions to low Earth orbit.

  • A national space-based facility, such as the Bharatiya Antariksh Station, will accelerate microgravity-based scientific research and technological development.

  • This will result in technical spin-offs and promote innovation in important fields of research and development.

  • significant industry participation and economic activity in the human space programme will lead to significant job creation, particularly in niche high-technology areas of space and related sectors.

Funding

The Union Cabinet also approved the continuation of the Gaganyaan mission and the establishment of the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS) for a cost of Rs 20,193 crore.

Deadline

The space agency has set December 2029 as the timeframe for completing all launches and operations of the first BAS module.

Space Stations Set Up By Other Countries

The United States, Russia, and China each have their own space station.
