Description
Prasanthi Ram (32), an Indian-origin lecturer at the University of Nanyang Technological University, won the Singapore Literature Prize for English Fiction for her short tale "Nine Yard Sarees," which was published at the end of 2023.
Topic Of The Story
The short story cycle follows generations of a Tamil Brahmin family spread between Singapore, Sydney, New York, and Connecticut.
Her Remarks
Prasanthi remarked of her work, which The Straits Times praised as "one of the best debuts in Singapore fiction," "I am utterly shocked. I am really humbled that the judges noticed merit in Nine Yard Sarees, especially because I composed it while caring for my late father.
Reason For Her Excellent Writing
Her writing was described as "skilful, assured, comedic at times, and profoundly moving" by a three-member panel. It also praised Prasanthi as "a clear-sighted and ruthlessly principled observer," with her collection demonstrating "with remorseless precision the damage women inflict on each other and the men in their families."
About The Singapore Literature Prize
The Singapore Literature Prize is a biennial award in Singapore that recognizes excellent published works by Singaporean authors in any of the four official languages: Chinese, English, Malay, or Tamil. The Singapore Book Council (SBC) organizes the competition, which is supported by the National Art Council.
