India has become the world's greatest plastic polluter, producing 9.3 million tonnes of plastic waste annually. This quantity accounts for around 20% of total worldwide plastic emissions, demonstrating how serious the situation is for both India and the world.
Study Findings
According to a new study published in Nature, India's official data on plastic trash is likely to be inadequate. The present estimate of 0.12 kg of plastic garbage per person per day does not accurately reflect the actual situation. This is because the data does not include plastic garbage from rural areas or the informal recycling sector. Furthermore, the amount of waste collected is likely exaggerated, making it difficult to determine the exact scope of the problem.
Global Plastic Polluters
India is the world's largest plastic polluter, followed by Nigeria and Indonesia, which emit 3.5 million and 3.4 million tonnes of plastic garbage, respectively. China, previously the largest plastic polluter, has upgraded its waste management systems and is now rated fourth.
About Plastic Emissions
Plastic emissions are plastic waste that escapes regulated systems (such as waste collection and recycling) and ends up in the environment (eg, rivers, oceans, or land). This study examines uncollected debris and littering to gain a better understanding of the extent of plastic pollution.
Sources Of Plastic Waste
The study found five primary sources of plastic trash emissions-
Uncollected rubbish is plastic waste that is never picked up.
Littering is defined as the act of throwing plastic into the streets or natural areas.
Waste collection systems aren't always efficient.
Uncontrolled disposal - Waste discharged in open locations without sufficient management.
Rejects from sorting and reprocessing- Plastic that cannot be recycled and is discarded.
Littering is a larger concern in affluent countries, while uncollected rubbish is the main issue in underdeveloped countries such as India.
Implications Of Future Action
These findings are significant for the Global Plastics Treaty, a global accord set to be finished by 2024. This convention seeks to eliminate plastic pollution and the greenhouse emissions that result from it. The analysis gives countries a starting point for developing action strategies to manage and decrease plastic waste.
India's position as the world's leading plastic polluter emphasizes the need for rapid action. To properly handle the environmental crisis, the country must focus on acquiring better data, particularly from rural areas, as well as boosting waste collection.
