Description
The Agni-4 Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM) was successfully tested and launched from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha on September 6, 2024. During the test, the DRDO-developed missile validated all operational and technical criteria.
This test was carried out by the Strategic Forces Command, a branch of India's Nuclear Command Authority (NCA). Agni-4 is 20 meters long, capable of reaching targets up to 4,000 kilometers away, has a payload capacity of 1,000 kilograms, and can be fired from a road-mobile launcher. In its initial test launch in 2012, the missile, called as Agni-2 Prime, successfully traveled over 3,000 kilometers.
Background
The Agni missile series is created internally by DRDO, with the Agni-4 representing a significant improvement in India' missile technology. The next in the series, Agni-5, illustrates India's increasing prowess in long-range ballistic missiles.
Strategic Significance
This test strengthens India's defense capabilities, particularly its nuclear deterrence, because Agni-4's range spans a large chunk of the area, cementing India's position in the strategic defense domain.
