The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) unveiled its first indigenously designed Pollution Control Vessel on August 29, 2024, , the 'Samudra Pratap,' in Goa. Raksha Rajya Mantri Shri Sanjay Seth, who presided over the occasion, underlined the importance of industrial partners helping India become entirely self-sufficient (Aatmanirbhar) in military production and a net exporter. The vessel, built by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), is intended to mitigate oil spills along India's coastlines and marks a key milestone in indigenous shipbuilding.
Vessel Specifications And Construction
The 'Samudra Pratap,' named after Smt Neeta Seth, was built by GSL to satisfy the ICG's special requirements. The yacht measures 114.5 meters long, 16.5 meters wide, and weighs 4170 tons. GSL, a renowned Indian shipyard, has signed a contract to build two such vessels for the ICG at a cost of Rs 583 crore. This is the first time these vessels have been developed and produced locally.

The launch of 'Samudra Pratap' is viewed as a testament to India's growing shipbuilding skills and progress toward self-reliance. Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth stated that the vessel is 72% self-sufficient and equipped with cutting-edge technologies to battle coastal pollution effectively. The warship, valued at Rupees crores, is expected to defend India's maritime environment and coastline security.

The ceremony was attended by Shri Brajesh Kumar Upadhyaya, Chairman and Managing Director of GSL, as well as officials from the Ministry of Defence, ICG, Indian Navy, and GSL.
