The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) in India is proposing a new policy to repair and modernize outdated national highways using a technique known as whitetopping technology. MoRTH is inviting stakeholders to provide comments on this notion by September 7. This program is required since many of India's national highways, which encompass over 1.46 lakh kilometers, are aged and in need of rehabilitation.

Definition Of Whitetopping Technology

Whitetopping is the process of placing a layer of Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) on top of existing bituminous (asphalt) roadways. This approach is especially effective for roads that suffer from inadequate drainage. Whitetopping has already proven successful in a number of government initiatives, including the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) and cities such as Bengaluru.

Benefits Of Whitetopping

Whitetopping has various advantages over typical asphalt overlays-

• Longer Lifespan- It can increase the life of a road by 20-25 years.

• Less Maintenance- Roads need less maintenance and fewer lane closures.

• Cost-effective- Despite the higher initial cost, the long-term benefits from decreased maintenance make it an excellent investment.

• Environmental Benefits- Concrete's lighter tone reflects more light, which helps to cool urban areas and reduces the heat island effect.

• Better Performance- Whitetopping is more resistant to common road concerns such as deformation, rutting, and cracking, particularly in hotter areas.

• Improved gasoline Efficiency- When driving on concrete roads, vehicles use less gasoline than on asphalt roads.

MoRTH is actively collecting input from many stakeholders to improve the proposed policy and ensure its effective implementation. Gathering feedback is critical for addressing any practical issues and ensuring the viability of this unique approach to highway maintenance.
