Karthik Venkataraman won the 61st Indian National Championship, organized by the Haryana Chess Association, with 9/11 points. This is Karthik's second national championship victory; he also won in 2022. Surya Ganguly and Neelash Saha scored the same number of points as the champion, but came in second and third place on tiebreaks.
Karthik's Tiebreak Score
Karthik's tie-break score was 78 to Ganguly's 77.5. A win over Himal Gusain would have given Ganguly his seventh national championship, but he had to settle with his fourth draw in a row; he had won his first seven games and was the solitary leader going into the final round.
Finished With Nine Points From Eleven Rounds
Karthik, Ganguly, and Neelash Saha concluded with nine points from 11 rounds at the 61st National Chess Championship on Tuesday, after the tie was broken at the RPS International School using the Buchholz System.
Winner Of The Game
Karthik needed to win his game against Mitrabha Guha to have any chance of winning his second Nationals (he won the 59th edition early last year). He used the Caro-Kann Defence against the English Opening and triumphed in 58 moves by converting a superior rook-and-pawn ending.
