This achievement followed the reactor's commercial operation beginning on March 31, 2024, and its initial criticality on December 17, 2023. The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) verified that Unit 4 at KAPS had previously been operating at 90% capacity before reaching its full 700 MW output.

The KAPS-4 unit, a 700 MW Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) built in India, exemplifies the country's achievement with homegrown nuclear technology. The full power operation of KAPS-4 and its twin unit, KAPS-3, demonstrates the effectiveness of the PHWR design.

Future Prospects

NPCIL is expanding its nuclear energy capacity with 14 more reactors of the same design scheduled for completion in 2031-2032. NPCIL now runs 24 reactors totaling 8,180 MW, with eight further reactors under development and ten more in the pre-project phase. These improvements are planned to increase India's nuclear power capacity to 22,480 megawatts by 2031-2032.
