Description
The Geneva Conventions were adopted in 1949, and August 12 marked 75 years since then.
About The Geneva Conventions
They are a collection of four treaties including over 400 articles that establish precise guidelines for the treatment of prisoners, safeguard hospitals and medical personnel, allow humanitarian help, and ban torture, rape, and sexual violence.
The UN formalised it in 1949.
There are three further procedures, the first two of which were established in 1977 and the third in 2005.
The Conventions' primary focus is on the treatment of noncombatants and prisoners of war, rather than the use of conventional, biological, and chemical weapons, which are covered by The Hague Conventions and the Geneva Protocol.
List Of Conventions
The first Geneva Convention
It protects wounded and ill soldiers on land during wartime.
It also applies to medical and religious staff, medical facilities, and medical transportation.
The second Geneva Convention
It protects injured, ill, and shipwrecked military men at sea during wartime.
This Convention replaced the 1907 Hague Convention on the Application of Geneva Convention Principles to Maritime Warfare.
The third Geneva Convention
It refers to captives of war.
The Convention outlines the idea that prisoners of war must be liberated and repatriated immediately after active hostilities cease.
The 4th Geneva Convention
It protects citizens, particularly those in occupied territory.
It includes a brief section on general population protection from some outcomes of conflict, but does not discuss hostilities themselves.
