Thailand's Parliament elected Paetongtarn Shinawatra as the country's youngest Prime Minister, just days after her father Thaksin Shinawatra was deposed by court order on August 16. Last year, on the campaign trail in rural Thailand, Paetongtarn Shinawatra reminded people of her influential wealthy family's populist tradition in her electoral debut.
Second Female To Hold The Role Of prime minister
Shinawatra, 37, garnered 319 votes, representing nearly two-thirds of the House. With this victory, she became the second female prime minister, following her aunt Yingluck Shinawatra.
Paetongtarn may be concerned about the legacy and political future of the rich Shinawatra family, whose once-unstoppable populist juggernaut suffered its first defeat in over two decades last year and was forced to form a government with its arch opponents in the military.
About Paetongtarn Shinawatra
Paetongtarn was born in Bangkok and serves as a premier shareholder of SC Asset Corporation as well as a director of the Thai Com Foundation. According to her profile on the Thaicom Foundation's official website, she graduated from Chulalongkorn University with a bachelor's degree in Political Science, Sociology, and Anthropology in 2008. She later pursued a master's degree in International Hotel Management at the University of Surrey in England.
Paetongtarn In Politics
Thaksin's youngest child has had a brief political career. Paetongtarn entered politics in 2022, when she was elected as 'Head of the Pheu Thai Family', making her the Pheu Thai Party's top prime ministerial contender. "When I was eight years old, my father entered politics. Since that day, my life has been linked with politics," she stated in a March speech.
No Administrative Experience
In April 2023, she was formally nominated as one of three prime minister candidates, alongside Srettha Thavisin, Thailand's 30th Prime Minister, and Chaikasem Nitisiri, Minister of Justice in her aunt's Cabinet. The brief political journey leaves Paetongtarn with little to no administration expertise and an elected government position she has never held before. Previously, she was labelled as inexperienced after criticizing the Bank of Thailand's independence as a "obstacle" to resolving economic issues.
