In an official announcement, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) issued a few revisions to the Affiliation Bye-Laws regarding the provisions for textbook use by schools.
Latest Amendments
The latest amendments to the Affiliation Bye-Laws 2018 can be found in Chapter 2, Clause 2.4.7, according to the notice. According to the most recent changes to the Bye-Laws, schools are highly urged to use NCERT/SCERT texts for classes I through VIII. Schools may employ supplementary material according to their needs, but it must be connected with the NCF-FS (National Curriculum Framework for Foundational Stage) and NCF-SE (National Curriculum Framework for School Education).
The school's chosen extra material should provide the important core material (together with discussion, analysis, examples, and applications), according to CBSE.
For classes IX to XII, schools are required to use the NCERT textbooks prescribed in the CBSE curriculum. For subjects where NCERT/SCERT textbooks are not available, schools must use the CBSE books provided on the website.
Schools can employ supplementary materials and investigate the usage of digital information to supplement textbooks, but they must always be linked with the NCF-SE (National Curriculum Framework for School Education), according to the official notification.
The amended Bye-Laws also require schools to use caution when using supplementary materials, digital content, and books published by private publishers for instructional purposes. When such materials are used, schools must ensure that there is no inappropriate content that could offend the feelings of any class, community, gender, or religion group in society.
Schools must also post a list of prescribed books for all classes on their website, along with a formal declaration signed by the Manager and Principal stating that they have reviewed the contents of the prescribed books and accept full responsibility.
CBSE has notified the school that if it is found to be prescribing a book with undesirable content, action will be taken.
