Chhattisgarh Has Established Third Largest Tiger Reserve Amid Decline In Tiger Population

Description

Chhattisgarh officially approved the establishment of the Guru Ghasidas-Tamor Pingla Tiger Reserve to counter a severe reduction in the state's tiger populations. Despite legal and environmental hurdles, the new reserve merges an existing national park and a wildlife sanctuary in order to strengthen conservation efforts.

Background Of Tiger Population Decline

According to a report released by the National Tiger Conservation Authority in July 2023, the number of tigers in Chhattisgarh has decreased considerably, from 46 in 2014 to only 17 by 2022. This concerning drop has frightened conservationists, prompting legal action to expedite the establishment of additional reserves. In July 2023, the Chhattisgarh High Court asked the state administration to make a decision on the proposed tiger reserve within four weeks. This order followed a public interest lawsuit filed in 2019 that criticized the government's tardy reaction to tiger protection.

Formation Of The New Reserve

Recently, the Chhattisgarh cabinet approved the merging of Guru Ghasidas National Park and Tamor Pingla Sanctuary, resulting in a single reserve covering 2,829 square kilometers over four districts. This new reserve will be Chhattisgarh's fourth and India's third largest. The development of this reserve is projected to enhance eco-tourism, producing jobs for locals as guides and resort administrators. The National Project Tiger Authority will support the reserve by providing additional financing for projects that help enhance local livelihoods.

Comparison To Other Tiger Reserves

The Guru Ghasidas-Tamor Pingla Tiger Reserve is presently India's third largest, after the Nagarjunasagar Srisailam and Manas reserves. These two larger reserves have been successful in maintaining stable tiger populations, and Chhattisgarh intends to replicate that success by increasing conservation efforts in the new reserve.
