With only 24 hours until the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) PG 2024, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) released a notice on August 10, describing the normalisation procedure for preparing the results.
In the official notice, the NBEMS said it “has adopted the process which is currently being used by AIIMS-New Delhi for its various examinations conducted in more than one shift including but not limited to INI-CET, in preparation of result for NEET-PG 2024.”
The NBEMS further referred to the AIIMS Delhi notice dated January 20, 2023, wherein it has been mentioned that the “Percentile score is the Normalised Score for the examination.”
About Percentile Score
According to the AIIMS Delhi notification, the Percentile Score is the percentage of students who scored EQUAL TO OR BELOW (same or lower raw scores) in that specific percentile in that examination.
In other words, the top (highest score) of each group (shift) will be assigned the same Percentile of 100, which is preferable. The marks achieved between the top and lowest scores are transformed to the relevant percentiles. The announcement also indicated that Percentile Scores will be calculated to 7 decimal places to eliminate the bunching effect and lessen ties.
“In this method of scoring, the HIGHEST SCORE in each paper (irrespective of the raw scores/percentage obtained) will be the 100 Percentile indicating that 100% of candidates have scored equal to or lesser than the highest scorer/ topper for that shift,” it added. Meanwhile, the lowest score would be assigned a percentile based on the total number of candidates who appeared in the examination.
Notably, the recent warning from the NBEMS comes barely a day after the Supreme Court denied a petition to postpone the NEET PG 2024 on August 9. Aside from alleging concerns with travel arrangements to allocated seats, the petitioners demanded disclosure of the normalisation method for the four sets of question papers to candidates in order to prevent arbitrariness in the process.
In its decision, the Supreme Court stated that it could not jeopardize the careers of more than 2 lakh candidates, and that the interests of a few petitioners could not outweigh the greater concerns of the vast majority of students and their families.
