Description

The Indian Army recently conducted a military exercise known as 'Parvat Prahaar' in the Ladakh region, near the India-China border. This exercise prepares soldiers for high-altitude warfare, which entails battling in the rugged and steep terrain of Eastern Ladakh. The exercise is an important component of India's military strategy, particularly considering the ongoing tensions with China.

Overview Of 'Parvat Prahaar'

The word 'Parvat Prahaar' means "Mountain Strike." The practice is intended to prepare soldiers to deal with the unique problems they may experience in hilly terrain. During the two-week exercise, soldiers simulate real-world combat scenarios, allowing them to better prepare for prospective conflicts.

Participating Forces

This exercise involves a range of military branches and equipment, such as-

  • Infantry- Foot soldiers trained for field combat.

  • Armoured units- It include tanks and other strongly armored vehicles.

  • Artillery- It refers to large weapons and missile systems capable of hitting distant targets.

  • Logistical support- It includes supplies and services required to support the troops.

Some of the advanced military assets demonstrated during the drill include-

  • Tanks and Armoured Fighting Vehicles- These are used for ground combat and defense.

  • Artillery guns- It include the K-9 Vajra, a powerful mobile cannon.

  • Air defence systems- It defend against aircraft attacks.

  • Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)- Drones designed for surveillance and attack.

Background Of Tensions

Tensions between India and China have risen since the 2020 skirmish in Galwan Valley. Despite several rounds of negotiations, no settlement has been reached. In response, India has increased its military presence in the region, deploying over 500 tanks, 50,000 troops, and constructing considerable infrastructure. The Mountain Strike Corps, a specialized organization of the Indian Army's Northern Command, plays an important role in this exercise. They are in charge of operations along India's disputed border with China, known as the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

About Parvat Prahaar

Parvat Prahaar is an Indian military operation launched in 1987 to suppress insurgency in the Himalayas. This mission centered on high-altitude warfare, which necessitates particular training for troops. It prioritized intelligence gathering and collaboration with local communities to reduce the recruitment of locals into violent groups. In this region, the Indian Army employed both aggressive and passive measures, including as direct military action and cultivating trust with the local populace. This operation was part of a larger attempt to combat terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir and establish long-term peace.
