Description
Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, the former chief minister of West Bengal and a veteran CPIM leader, died on August 8 at his apartment on Palm Avenue in Kolkata. Buddhadeb, who had been suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary illness for several years, was 80. He is survived by his wife Mira and daughter Suchetana.
About Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee
Mr Bhattacharjee, a Presidency College alumnus from Kolkata, worked as a schoolteacher before entering politics full-time. After serving as an MLA and state minister, Mr Basu was promoted to Deputy Chief Minister before stepping down in 2000. As Chief Minister, he led the CPM to Assembly election victory in 2001 and 2006.
Known For His Simple Lifestyle
Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was noted for his modest lifestyle. He died in the two-bedroom flat on Palm Avenue from where he previously governed the state. His organs will be donated for medical research according to his wishes. His body will be preserved inside the CPM headquarters so that his followers can pay their respects, and the final journey will take place tomorrow.
His Tenure As CM
He was appointed chief minister in 2000 after Jyoti Basu, the country's longest-serving chief minister at the time, resigned owing to health concerns. As CM, he led the Left Front to two consecutive victories in the assembly elections in 2001 and 2006.
Open Policy Toward Business
During Mr Bhattacharjee's term, the Left Front government was more friendly to business than the Jyoti Basu rule. Ironically, it was this policy, as well as industrial land acquisitions, that led to the Left's devastating defeat in the 2011 election.
Reformists On The Left
He was renowned as a reformist on the Left, particularly for attempting to bring industrialization to the state. He was responsible for the establishment of a Tata Nano facility in Singur and the development of a special economic zone in Nandigram, and it was during his tenure that Bengal saw investments in IT and IT-enabled businesses.
