The Indian government has announced the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskars, which will recognize and celebrate outstanding achievements to science, technology, and innovation. This new award system, which replaces over 300 prior honors from various science departments, is intended to recognize the accomplishments of academics, technologists, and inventors across the country.

The Vigyan Ratna Puraskar Honors A Lifetime Of Achievement

Dr. Govindarajan Padmanabhan, the first recipient

Dr. Govindarajan Padmanabhan, a renowned scientist and former director of the Indian Institute of Science-Bengaluru, received the highest distinction, the Vigyan Ratna Puraskar. Dr. Padmanabhan, a Padma Bhushan recipient, receives this lifetime achievement award in recognition of his significant contributions to the field of biochemistry.

Categories And Recipients

The government has announced a total of 33 Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskars in various categories-

  • Vigyan Shri Awards

Thirteen scientists got the Vigyan Shri award for their outstanding contributions to various scientific fields.

  • Vigyan Yuva - Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Awards

Eighteen young scientists under the age of 45 received the Vigyan Yuva-Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar awards, carrying on the distinguished Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar prize.

  • Vigyan Team Award

The Vigyan Team award was given to Team Chandrayaan-3 in recognition of their outstanding contributions to India's space program, particularly the successful moon landing.

Award Ceremony And Significance

  • National Space Day Celebration

President Droupadi Murmu is expected to present the awards on August 23, National Space Day, which commemorates the landing of Chandrayaan-3 near the Moon's South Pole.

  • Consolidation of Scientific Awards

This new award system marks a significant consolidation of India's scientific honors. It replaces the former system, which includes the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar award, which was established in 1958 and named after the distinguished chemist and first head of the University Grants Commission and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research.
