Description
Scientists from India and the United Kingdom have found six new species of bent-toed geckos in northeast India. This discovery shows the region's extensive and mostly unknown ecological variety, underlining the significance of continued biological research.
Key Research Institutions
The Wildlife Institute of India (WII), the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE), and the Natural History Museum London (NHM) worked together to conduct the study. Their collaborative efforts highlight the importance of worldwide cooperation in biodiversity research.
Newly discovered gecko species are found in four states: Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram. This implies that each state's distinct ecosystem contributes to the region's biodiversity.
Species Overview
Here are the new gecko species and where they were discovered-
The Namdapha Bent- Toed Gecko is found in the Namdapha Tiger Reserve and resides in lowland evergreen forests.
Siang River Bent-Toed Gecko- Found in the Siang River valley, indicating a distinct environment.
The Ngengpui Bent-Toed Gecko lives in the Ngengpui Wildlife Sanctuary and flourishes in tropical semi-evergreen forests.
The Manipur Bent-Toed Gecko may be found in Lamdan Kabui village and lives in shrub regions at moderate elevations.
Kiphire Bent-Toed Gecko- Found in Nagaland, this species lives on regenerated jhum fields (slash-and-burn agricultural areas).
Barail Hill Bent-Toed Gecko- This species is also found in Nagaland and lives in protected woods.
Significance Of Findings
These results show that Northeast India has a high level of species richness, particularly among bent-toed geckos, with over 30 endemic species identified. This suggests that the land south of the Brahmaputra River is environmentally richer than the Himalayan foothills. The data also suggest that biodiversity in India's protected regions, such as tiger reserves and wildlife sanctuaries, is not sufficiently documented. They also emphasize the relevance of understudied environments, such as abandoned jhum plains, in maintaining undocumented species. The study emphasizes the critical need for ongoing ecological surveys in Northeast India to discover and document additional species, particularly in underexplored areas.
