After the usual admission procedures are completed, Delhi University (DU) will use Class XII scores to replace any remaining vacant seats, according to Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh said on August 1.
The announcement comes as the University Grants Commission (UGC) has published a standard operating procedure (SOP) for Central Universities to ensure that all UG and PG seats are filled.
According to the UGC, holding seats unfilled for an entire academic year is not only a waste of money, but it also denies many students access to quality higher education.
Reacting to the directive, Yogesh Singh told ANI, "We welcome the directive by UGC. We are equally sensitive to the fact that seats in any course should not remain vacant. We will use Class XII marks to fill the vacant seats in UG programs."
Last year, around 5000 seats remained unfilled at DU, despite the institution using several means to fill all seats. According to the UGC's Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), institutions may hold entrance exams for undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) courses if seats remain vacant following the regular admission rounds.
When asked about holding an entrance exam to fill vacant seats, Singh said, "We will not hold an entrance exam but will ensure all seats are filled in the university."
The admissions procedure for the school year 2024-25 is now ongoing. The Common University Entrance Test Undergraduate (CUET UG) of Delhi University offers about 71,000 seats in more than 65 colleges.
The university's current admissions process began on May 28 with the first phase, which saw around 270,000 students register through the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) portal.
However, the start of phase two of the admissions process has been delayed due to the postponing of the CUET UG results. The institution intends to move quickly after the results are released, ensuring that all available seats are filled.
According to the UGC's rules, the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) results would continue to be the major criterion for admission to central universities. Students who appeared in CUET but did not previously apply to the relevant university for the courses or programs may still be eligible.
In addition, universities may consider conducting an entrance examination at their level, or the concerned department of the university may conduct a screening test to fill vacant seats in the university if seats remain available after exhausting the list of applicants who appeared in the CUET. Furthermore, students who appeared in the CUET may be considered regardless of the domain topic papers in which they participated, according to the SOP, and institutions may loosen the domain subject-specific criteria for admission to a certain course or program.
