The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and IDBI Bank will establish a cybersecurity lab to develop and deploy security solutions in critical areas like as healthcare, fintech, and aerospace. The 'IDBI - IITM Secure Systems Lab' (I2SSL) was established on August 1 on the IIT Madras campus.

According to IIT Madras, the lab will focus on developing market-ready intellectual property in cybersecurity, as well as productizing and commercializing research findings, particularly for mobile technology.

This lab aims to focus on cybersecurity in systems deployed in industries such as banking, automotive, power, and telecommunications, among others, and to conduct experimental evaluation and assessment exercises, according to IIT Madras. The researchers will also develop test cases for testing, conduct vulnerability research, and contribute to the development of hardening guidelines. It will help enterprise systems in controlling cybersecurity risks in real time, it said.

The 'IDBI - IITM Secure Systems Lab' (I2SSL) will focus on secure systems engineering. The researchers hope to design and implement solutions that address security concerns from a holistic end-to-end perspective, ranging from fundamental theoretical problems to practical system building to exploiting leakages and mounting implementation-based attacks. The lab will serve as a platform for research students and foster cybersecurity thinking in undergraduates through online programs, capture the flags (CTFs), hackathons, and projects.

The I2SSL at IIT Madras intends to create innovative technologies for key applications like as hardware firewalls, point-of-sale devices, and mobile banking. Memory safe languages, tagged architectures that allow fine-grained access control, memory encryption, and an ingeniously constructed Trusted Platform Module (TPM) would be used to provide security.

The researchers also intend to develop an online forum to encourage Al-based malware analysis. I2SSL will also concentrate on creating tools for automated security assessments. In the field of cryptography, researchers will seek to create hardware accelerators for crypto-primitives such as symmetric and asymmetric key cryptography, as well as post-quantum cryptography.

The lab was inaugurated by Rakesh Sharma, managing director and chief executive officer, IDBI Bank, in the presence of Prof V Kamakoti, director, IIT Madras, Saumya Chaudhuri, CGM, IDBI Bank, Manjunath Pai, CGM and zonal head- Chennai zone, IDBI Bank, Prof Mahesh Panchagnula, dean (alumni and corporate relations), IIT Madras, Dr Chester Rebeiro, principal investigator, IDBI - IITM Secure Systems Lab (I2SSL), IIT Madras, Kaviraj Nair, CEO, office of institutional advancement.
