Delhi Education Minister Atishi has ordered that all schools in the national capital, both public and private, will stay closed on August 1 due to severe rainfall.
Taking to her official handle on microblogging site X, Atishi posted on Wednesday, "In light of the very heavy rainfall today evening and the forecast of heavy rainfall tomorrow, all schools--government and private--will remain closed tomorrow."
Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi also wrote on her X Twitter that all schools in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi will be closed on August 1 due to the forecast of bad weather.
"All MCD schools will remain closed tomorrow, August 1, 2024, in view of incessant rainfall in the National Capital and the forecast of adverse weather conditions," read the post.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) claimed that clouds converged over Delhi from all angles, forcing inhabitants to avoid unnecessary travel.
"Clouds have converged over Delhi from all four sectors. Widespread light to moderate rainfall with isolated intense to very intense spells (3-5 cm/hr) is likely over Delhi in the next two hours," the IMD posted on X.
Adding to the threat of rain-related incidents, a mother and her kid drowned after falling into a wet drain in the Ghazipur neighborhood of East Delhi on July 31, following heavy rain in the national capital. Tanuja (22) and her child, Priyansh (3), both residents of Prakash Nagar Khoda Colony in Ghaziabad, died.
"The bodies have been recovered and further legal action is being taken by Ghazipur East Delhi Police Station," said the police.
Meanwhile, a house in Delhi's Sabzi Mandi area fell due to heavy rains. Five fire tenders were summoned to the scene.
However, firefighting officials were delayed owing to road congestion. The event happened at 8:57 pm, according to reports. Earlier in the day, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Vinai Kumar Saxena advised all officers to remain vigilant in the face of the current heavy rain in the national capital.
Rain fell in numerous sections of Delhi and the surrounding National Capital Region (NCR) on July 31 evening, offering relief from the sultry weather. However, the downpour caused traffic congestion across the city. According to airport sources, 10 flights were diverted from Delhi between 7.30 pm and 8:00 pm due to inclement weather. After days of heavy rain in the national capital, severe waterlogging was observed near AIIMS. According to the IMD, intermittent showers are likely in Delhi till August 5.
