In an unprecedented endeavor, Thekkady's Periyar Tiger Reserve (PTR) has constructed a wind turbine to power real-time monitoring cameras and Wi-Fi access throughout its vast forest. This approach is a huge step forward in the reserve's efforts to improve conservation technology and communication.

Power Generation For Technology

The PTR East Division, which includes 17 forest sections, historically relied on solar power for wireless communication and operating purposes. However, inefficiencies caused by the foggy atmosphere and heavy rainfall frequently reduced the performance of solar panels. The newly installed wind turbine intends to alleviate these issues by providing a more consistent power supply for monitoring and communication systems.

• Periyar Tiger Reserve is located in Kerala, India and comprises approximately 925 square kilometers.

• Established in 1978 as India's tenth tiger reserve under Project Tiger.
