The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) welcomed its Y24 batch of students with a 10-day orientation course prepared by the Institute Counselling Service. This program began a new academic chapter for more than 1,500 postgraduate (PG) and 1,215 undergraduate (UG) students.
Over 2,700 undergraduate students' parents attended a dedicated orientation programme. Parents were exposed to IIT Kanpur's academic and administrative systems, as well as the wellness initiatives in place to help students. “The session reassured parents of the institute’s commitment to providing top-tier education and comprehensive support for their children,” an official statement said.
During the 10-day orientation session, students were presented to a wide range of campus activities, clubs, societies, and functional organizations. These included the Student Gymkhana, Gender Cell, Startup Incubation and Innovation Centre (SIIC), de-addiction campaigns, internships, industry-academic cooperation, Technopark, student exchange programs with international universities, and cyber security measures. Counsellors at the institute advised students on how to embrace transitions.
The event also included a variety of educational and entertaining activities such as treasure hunts, performances by seniors and freshmen, Zumba and DJ evenings, science exhibitions, lab visits, and a tour of the site, including the airport.
This year, IIT Kanpur reinstated its Faculty Guide network, with approximately 85 faculty members volunteering to help students. Each Faculty Guide will be allocated to around 30 undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) students, providing ongoing support throughout their academic careers. The Faculty Guides will assist Y24 students with navigating campus life, making course changes, understanding institutional norms, participating in co-curricular activities, exploring career options, and staying up to date on current trends.
In addition, IIT Kanpur has established a central Anti-Ragging Committee to administer and enforce ragging policies. Each hall has its own section that collaborates with the central committee to ensure that the campus is free of harassment. To prevent ragging on campus, immediate senior students are allocated to mentor and support 5-6 new students each, guaranteeing a safe and smooth transition into campus life. "This system helps new students adapt more easily and fosters strong relationships across different classes and disciplines," according to an official statement.
