Description

India's first sunken museum, located within the Humayun Tomb complex in Delhi, opend on July 29, 2024. It was open to tourists beginning July 30. The museum's opening coincides with the 46th UNESCO World Heritage Committee meetings, were attended by Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Prince Rahim Aga Khan.

Significance Of Humayun Tomb

Humayun's Tomb, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is well known for its architectural and historical significance. Constructed in the 16th century, this structure is a prominent example of Mughal history and a significant cultural landmark in Delhi. It indicates the grandeur and wonderful design of Mughal architecture while also focusing on the era's artistic and cultural achievements.

Museum Design Inspiration

The newly opened underground museum at the Humayun Tomb building is influenced by ancient Indian 'baolis' (stepwells or water tanks), expertly combining historical features with contemporary exhibition techniques. This creative design not only enhances the museum's visual appeal, but also connects visitors to historical architectural styles.

Exhibitions And Artifacts

The museum houses a variety of historical objects, including:

  • The final section of Humayun's Tomb was repaired following storm damage in 2014.

  • Rare goods from the 16th and 17th centuries include 'farmans' (decrees), an astrolabe, a celestial sphere, and a warrior's helmet.

Construction of the museum began in April 2015, with an initial completion date slated for 2017. The museum was carefully located at the gateway to the World Heritage complex, connecting numerous cultural monuments in the area.

Integration of Technology

The museum employs cutting-edge technology to enhance the excitement and educational value of your visit. It features 3-D movies of historical scenes, which allow you to view what life was like in the past. There are also excellent scale replicas of the neighboring Nizamuddin Dargah complex, which was constructed in the fourteenth century. These models depict how the site has evolved over time, allowing us to better comprehend its lengthy history and significance.

About Humayun Tomb

  • Historical significance and design: Humayun's Tomb, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was commissioned in 1569-70 by Humayun's widow, Empress Bega Begum. It was the first garden mausoleum constructed in India, displaying Persian architectural elements and acting as a model for future Mughal design.

  • Architecture value: The tomb complex has around 100 additional tombs and a vast charbagh (four-fold) garden. Its design, which had a central dome and a symmetrical plan, subsequently influenced the construction of the Taj Mahal.

  • Restoration and Decoration:The Aga Khan Trust helped to restore and decorate the mausoleum in the twentieth century. The structure is made of red sandstone and embellished with elaborate geometric designs and calligraphy, emphasizing its artistic and architectural value.
