The Story Behind The Kargil War

Following the Indo-Pak War of 1971, there were other military clashes. Both countries conducted nuclear tests in 1998, which exacerbated tensions. To calm the situation in February 1999, both countries signed the Lahore Declaration, which promised a peaceful and bilateral settlement to the Kashmir problem. However, Pakistan's Armed personnel began moving soldiers and paramilitary personnel across the Line of Control (LoC) into Indian territory, under the codename 'Operation Badr'. The primary goal is to cut the link between Kashmir and Ladakh and remove the Indian Army from the Siachen Glacier. At the same time, Pakistan believed that causing any form of tension in this area would assist to make the Kashmir issue an international concern, allowing it to achieve a quick resolution.

The Scenario Before The Kargil War

During the winters of 1998-1999, the Pakistani Army began secretly training and dispatching troops to Kargil in order to dominate the region and claim the Siachen Glacier. The Pakistani Army declared that these were not Pakistani soldiers, but Mujahideen. Pakistan's major goal is to draw international attention to the conflict in order to put pressure on the Indian Army to evacuate its troops from the Siachen Glacier region and force India to resolve the Kashmir dispute.
